The determined Lord
Hadleigh by Virginia Heath – 5 stars
Plot summary
Penny Penhurst (nee Radley) haunts our male lead, Lord Tristian Hadleigh following the trial of her husband as a traitor. He offers her a position as a housekeeper at his estate in order to make amends for what he sees as an injustice created by the law he represents and never fails to uphold. What follows is a dance as our two main characters get to know each other. But, can they each get past the demons that hold the other in their grasp to allow true love to blossom?
Thoughts
Virginia Heath has been able to create a story that I was absolutely captivated by from the first page. In a change from some novels I have read in this genre, Penny is a strong-willed and determined woman who is portrayed really well. The sympathetic way that Heath captures a woman who has experienced what Penny has is well handled in my opinion. Although repetitive in nature, I really enjoyed the internal dialogue that was given to Penny and felt that she really came alive. It was also brilliant that Penny didn’t get “fixed” just by being loved, but was given control of her own destiny at the end – she was loved by the right man and that allowed her to love in return.
Lord Hadleigh was another figure I fell in love with, especially the scenes with him and baby Freddie. A wonderfully multifaceted character, Tristian’s story and feelings for Penny were so well handled I got “warm fuzzies” just reading (something which I really appreciated). His demons are done really well and he had me crying as I read his backstory.
Our story focused on these two main characters, however there were many background characters that were just as well written. However, an absolute highlight for me was the fact that the relationship between Penny and the rest of the female cast was so healthy and happy. The book didn’t have any female hate, but rather a group of women encouraging and looking out for each other. It was so refreshing.
In terms of plot, it is really easy to follow with minimum issues for our main characters other than the demons that follow them. I honestly felt so relaxed throughout this book, as it is a Mills and Boon so you know where it is going, and it was a nice trip to the end point. The pacing is fantastic. It was also nice to see “lust at first sight” (certainly on the part of one of our main characters) develop into love. It was lovely to watch the relationship develop.
I loved this book and I will most likely get to the rest of the series and looking out for more by this author. A relaxing read (much like chilling in your favourite comfy chair) that makes you feel things for our leads as does have some tearjerker moments. Would recommend to all those romantics out there looking for a good read.

Author Bio – When Virginia Heath was a little girl it took her ages to fall asleep, so she made up stories in her head to help pass the time while she was staring at the ceiling. As she got older, the stories became more complicated, sometimes taking weeks to get to the happy ending. Then one day, she decided to embrace the insomnia and start writing them down. Despite that, it still takes her forever to fall asleep.
